Swim Gear

Apparently my flu has settled into pneumonia once again, so I am still glued to my couch.  I'm more than ready to start my training, but since I can't walk more than a few steps without running out of breath, I know I have to be patient.

I did a lot of research today for sprint triathlon training programs, and they vary wildly.  I know a lot of it depends on what my physical therapist says about my knee, so I may have to focus on the swimming portion initially.  I have plenty of time to train, so time is on my side.

To prepare for my swimming, I ordered a few essentials:  underwater iPod gear, new super cool goggles, and a couple of swimming shorts and shirts.  I normally wear mens swim trunks and a t shirt to swim, as that is how I'm comfortable, but that's too much bulk for training.  I wouldn't dream of wearing a women's suit (gross), so I ordered a couple speedos!!

Now before you picture horrifying beach images we've all had to endure, it's not the banana hammock kind, don't you worry.  They look like bike shorts, but they are meant for swimming, and they go to the knee, but they are fitted, so they won't get in the way of my super fast doggy paddling.  I also ordered two short sleeved swim shirts too - fitted and light weight, so I will be ready to train!

I'm not sure how long a quarter mile swim is compared to the length of the pool I use, so I need to do some calculations.  Either way, if I can swim at my top speed for 45 minutes straight by the time I'm done my training, I should have no problem with the 1/4 mile swim.  I currently swim 45 to 60 minutes when I exercise in the pool, but it's not at top speed constantly.  I sprint swim for 5 minutes, then I do more leisurely laps, then back to the sprint, etc...

I look forward to working my way up to the endurance that will be required to complete a sprint or mini triathlon.  I can't imagine the difference I will feel in my physical ability between now and then...especially because I've been sick for 3 weeks, but also because I'm feeling quite fat and gross lately.

The biggest loser competition begins in just a few days.  I have been eating poorly since I've been sick, and my body cannot wait for fresh, healthy foods and waaaay less salt.  I've been bad.  Admitting it is the first step, right?  Hopefully step two has something to do with not having pneumonia.

Well, I see it is 8PM on a Saturday night over a holiday weekend - it must be time for me to go to bed!  ;-)
Good night, and be well.
